Rainpillar: where acoustics, well-being and design come together

A Rainpillar is a handcrafted sound instrument designed to produce a long, fluid and continuous rain sound. Our concept brings together three worlds that shape every one of our Rainpillars: acoustics, for the quality of the sound; well-being, for the ways the instrument can be used; and design, so that it has a real place in the environment where it is experienced.

The idea began with an acoustic challenge: creating an instrument whose sound, duration and consistency would meet the expectations of musicians and professionals working with sound. Then another question emerged: why should an instrument designed to offer such a distinctive listening experience have to be put away when it is not being used?

This is how the Rainpillar, as we conceive it today, came to life: an instrument to listen to, an object to use and a presence within the space.

Acoustics as the starting point

Sound lies at the heart of the design.

Together with Mickaël Amant, cabinetmaker and artisan, we worked on the instrument’s internal structure, proportions and the movement of the elements that create the rain sound. Every choice directly influences the duration, texture, consistency and depth of the sound.

Unlike a traditional rainstick, which generally produces a relatively short sequence and needs to be turned over regularly, the Rainpillar is designed to extend the listening experience over several minutes. Depending on the model, the rain sound can accompany an entire sequence without repeated handling.

This acoustic approach makes our instruments suitable for a wide range of practices, including sound therapy, music therapy, relaxation, meditation, sound baths and musical exploration.

Sound is not something added to the design of the object. It shapes the way the instrument itself is conceived.

Well-being: creating a moment for listening

The slow flow of rain sound changes the way we listen to a space.

This quality of sound allows the Rainpillar to accompany moments of relaxation, meditation, rest or simply a quiet pause. It can be used during an individual session, as part of a professional practice, or simply to introduce a gentle sound presence into a room.

At home, it can be placed in a living room, bedroom or space dedicated to calm. In professional settings, it can be used in practices, studios, spas and wellness centres, as well as in reception areas or company rest spaces.

The instrument does not impose a particular use. Turn it over, the rain begins to flow, and each person is free to experience the sound in their own way.

Design: a sound object that takes its place in the space

We did not want to create an instrument that would be used and then put away.

The vertical form of the Rainpillar, the wood, its natural variations and the simplicity of its lines have therefore been considered with the same care as its acoustic qualities. When it is not being played, it retains a visual presence and can become part of an interior or a wider design project.

This approach opens up possibilities beyond individual use: hotels, spas, reception areas, relaxation spaces, companies, professional practices and interior design projects.

In these environments, the Rainpillar has a dual presence. When silent, it contributes to the setting. When turned over, the sound emerges and temporarily changes the way the space is perceived.

Three worlds brought together in one creation

Our work lies precisely at the meeting point of these three dimensions.

Acoustics determines how the rain forms, flows and continues over time.

Well-being gives meaning to the listening experience and to the moments in which the instrument is used.

Design allows it to remain present in the space rather than disappearing once a session is over.

None of these dimensions has been conceived separately. The form is influenced by the acoustics, the acoustics shape the listening experience, and the design gives the instrument its place in everyday life.

It is this fusion of sound, use and object that defines the Rainpillar concept.

A handcrafted sound instrument designed and made in France

Each Rainpillar is designed and handcrafted in our workshop in Montpellier, France.

The craftsmanship concerns both the appearance of the instrument and its acoustic behaviour. Its proportions, materials, internal construction and the movement of the seeds and other elements inside the instrument all contribute to the final sound.

This handcrafted production allows us to work simultaneously on listening quality, the duration of the rain sound, the finish and the visual presence of each model.

A Rainpillar is not an object to which sound has simply been added. Its form, construction and acoustics are conceived as a whole.

Where can a Rainpillar be used?

Because it combines sound with a strong visual presence, the Rainpillar can be used in many different settings:

  • sound therapy and music therapy practices;
  • meditation, relaxation and sound baths;
  • wellness spaces, spas and professional practices;
  • company rest and reception areas;
  • hotels and public-facing spaces;
  • interiors where sound, materials and design contribute to the atmosphere of the space.

To choose the right model and sound duration, consider the environment, the size of the space and the intended use.

The Rainpillar in one sentence

A Rainpillar is a handcrafted, long-duration sound instrument that brings together acoustic quality, well-being uses and design, making the sound of rain both an auditory and visual presence within a space.
